5.2% of total land belongs to circulation space. 80% of roads are 8 to 15 in width. Total road length of the area is about 160km. Galle road & new Galle road belongs to “A”class. Piliyandala – Katubedda road belongs to “B” class. All the other roads are belongs to “C” and “D” class. (Map JPG / PDF)
Transportation
The most common modes of public transportation are railway & bus. Transportation services are providing by Colombo Metropolitan Bus Company, Moratuwa Depot and Railway department.
There are seventy one busses travel from Moratuwa bus Depot along twenty seven routes. Hundred and sixty two private busses are traveled along eight routes. (Bus Transportation Time Table)
Major railway station locates near the Moratuwa bus terminal and there are four other railway stations as Angulana, Lunawa, Korelewelle and Egoda Uyana. Six trains are originating at Moratuwa railway station and return to same destination. (Map JPG / PDF) (Railway Time Table)
Water Supply
Pipe borne water network distributed water from Labugama, Kalatuwawe & Ambatale. Water supply is carried out by National Water Supply & Drainage Board. Water storage tank of the area has 8000 m3 capacity. 24 hours water supply is there without any under pressure circumstances or interruption of supply.
Due to the high density of population and pollution of ground water due improper discharge of industrial waste in most parts of the municipal area, ground water can not be used for drinking purposes although there is rich and continuous aquifer. Therefore people have to rely on pipe borne water. At present the entire municipal area is covered by pipe borne water. However, individual connections are not available within some of the law income settlements. Power Supply
Lanka Electricity provides Electricity for the entire area. Each ward has covered by 33Kw & 11Kw lines. 33Kw line is 60km in length while 11Kw line is 230 km in length. There are three primary stations (at Thelewala, Katubedde and Rawathawaththe) and 124 sub stations. Moratuwa Electricity supply center has divided into three depots for administrative purposes. Telecommunication
There are four telecom exchange centers. Total number of telephone demand for SLT in 2006 is 13152. In addition to the cable connections (SLT, Suntel, Lanka Bell) there is a wide cellular mobile coverage including Celtel, Mobitel GSM, dialog GSM, Hutch. (Map JPG / PDF)
Solid Waste Management
Solid waste disposal is one of the important functions of the local authority. This task is carried out under the supervision of the chief public health inspector. The municipality has 22 vehicles and 285 employees to attend to the task of disposal of solid waste.
Solid waste generate at the area is about 155 metric tones per day and consist of 84% bio-degradable waste (paper-11%, food- 69%, other 4%) and 16% non biodegradable waste(plastic- 11%, metal- 3%, glass-2%).
There are 96 small scale solid waste collection centers. Open dumping is practicing at a site near Deniyawaththe - thelewala which is in close proximity to Weras Ganga. This may create serious issues on environmental & social aspect.
The municipality has launched several programmes during the past few years to promote making of compost from biodegradable waste and recycling of the some of non bio degradable waste such as polythene.(Solid Waste Collection Time Table) (Map JPG / PDF)
Storm Water Drainage System
There are side drains along the main roads. Although in most of the areas side drains are poor in condition, some areas like laxapathiya, Katubedde, Telewala has improved drain network. Storm water drainage system is function by water retention areas as Bolgoda Lake, Lunawa lagoon and other small channels.
The overall drainage is a problem in Moratuwa Municipal Council area due to the existence of low lying areas at the periphery of Bolgoda Lake and Lunawa lagoon. During heavy rains many areas at the edges of Bolgoda Lake and Lunawa lagoon get inundated. Sri Lanka Land reclamation and Development Corporation has introduced controls regarding the development activities on the areas subjected on flooding.
